Independent Driving Explained
IAs part of your practical driving test, you’ll be required to complete about 20 minutes of independent driving. During this section, you’ll be asked to follow either:
Directions from a sat nav, or
Traffic signs
What If You Can’t See a Road Sign?
The examiner will let you know in advance which method you’ll be using. If a sat nav is used, the examiner will set it up for you — you won’t be allowed to use your own device.
What If You Go Off Route?
The examiner won’t give you a fault for taking a wrong turning. They’ll help you get back on the route if you do.
Making Mistakes During the Test
Taking a wrong turn won’t automatically result in a fault. The examiner will simply help guide you back onto the correct route. What matters most is that you drive safely and confidently.
If you make a mistake, don’t panic — you can continue with the test. As long as the mistake isn’t serious, it may not affect your test result. The examiner will only stop the test if they believe your driving poses a serious risk to yourself or others.
