Practical Driving Test

Booking Your Practical Driving Test

You can book your practical driving test once you’ve successfully passed your theory test. If you’re upgrading from an automatic car licence to a manual licence, you do not need to take the theory test again.

To pass the practical test, you must demonstrate that

  • you can drive safely and confidently in a variety of road and traffic conditions.
  • You’ll also need to show a clear understanding of the Highway Code through the way you drive.

The DVSA’s National Standard for Driving Cars outlines everything you need to know and be able to do to pass the test. You should only book your test when you can complete all tasks independently, without instruction. There is no minimum number of driving lessons required before taking the test — readiness depends entirely on your ability and confidence behind the wheel.

Once your test is booked, you can change the date if needed. If you’ve lost your booking confirmation email, you can also check your test details online using your driving licence number and booking reference.

If you don’t pass the test on your first attempt, don’t worry — you can rebook. However, your next test date must be at least 10 working days after your failed test.
